Lucy Harris, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Lucy Harris was born in 1814. Lucy soon married Thomas Newte Yule who was 11 years older than her on 12 July 1837. Yule had arrived in May 1830 from India. Yule obtained land at Toodyay, on the Canning River, and the Swan. (Government grant of Land Town allotment X32 X33 and Suburban allotment No 8 to Lowis, Houghton and Yule August 1834)

In  1838 Lucy gave birth to a son John Strelley Carslake Yule and tragically died some months after childbirth.

The Octagon Church was built in 1840 as a memorial to Lucy Yule (d. 1838) who was buried on the Mission Grant land at Middle Swan.  St Mary's Anglican Church - Swan Valley was designed by Dr Joseph Harris and his son in law in 1840. It was an octagonal rammed earth  mud brick construction . the porch faced north and a gum tree on the east side of the church was used as a belfry. The roof was brush and was large enough to hold 80 people. It was officially opened on the 29th of November 1840 in the presence of His Excellency the Governor, John Hutt Esquire (who laid the foundation stone in 1839).

The Octogon Church began deteriorating and the first section of St. Mary's Church was built. The church which has since been replaced c1871 had its first service on 19th December 1840. The graveyard dates back to 1838.

A picture of the original church can be viewed in the bottom panel of the 'Pentecost' stained glass window in the south transept of St. Mary's.
