Alice Maud Mary (Maud) Ford (1881-1973) –everyone has fond memories of Aunty Maud

 cont......

George and Alice Ford Story  Part 3

Alice, the eldest child of George and Alice, was the only child born in England having been born in Devon, Dartmouth on 20th April 1881.  In the 1901 census she lives away from home at South Norwood, part of Croydon as a servant for Emma L Mayo and son Harold. Her place of birth is listed incorrectly.  Her future husband Albert James Graham (Bert) Higgin born in 1880 is a boarder living with her mother and siblings Sidney, Cecil and Archibald.

After their marriage in 1904 they began their family with Elsie May born in 1905 and Edna Vera born in 1911 at Thornton Heath, Surrey. The 1911 census  has Bert working as Clerk in an  Engineers Office of the  Railway company. They live at  60 Kynaston Rd Thornton Heath.  They maintained close ties with Sid and Beatrice. It appears Sidney used his sister’s house as his home base in between his travels in the merchant navy.  Possibly Sid’s wife, Ethel stayed with them as she awaited her passage to Australia in 1913.

Maud and Bert 1911 census

Richard Harvey remembers his Great Auntie Maud very well & her husband Bert - he had a cold bath every day!  In fact Aunt Maud looked after his grandfather  for the first two years of his life.

In 1950 Maud was informant for her mother's death while living at 53 Cressingham Grove Sutton, Surrey.  She and Bert celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary in 1954. John Hayes Edith’s grandson remembers going to the Golden Wedding anniversary of Maud and Bert in Sutton, Surrey, when he was very young.

Maud died at age 92 in 1973 while Bert lived until 1975.

It seems they spent their final years living with their daughter Vera. In 1970, Bert writing to Sidney in Australia says “We have been living here with our daughter Vera and her husband for 5 years. Maud who was 89 last Monday has had one or two attacks of heart trouble and has to take things quietly. She sends her love on to you…”
